The Medicare prescription drug benefit, known as Medicare Part D, helps beneficiaries pay for outpatient prescription medications purchased through retail, mail-order, home infusion, and long-term care pharmacies. Part D provides prescription drug coverage to more than 56 million Americans, including seniors and people living with chronic conditions.
Unlike Medicare Parts A and B, which are administered by the federal government, Part D coverage is offered through private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. To receive Part D coverage, beneficiaries must enroll in a plan offered by one of these companies. Choosing the right plan for an individual’s needs is essential to managing medication costs and maintaining access to the necessary care.
The MAPRx Coalition works with Congress, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), and other key stakeholders to strengthen Medicare Part D and advocate for continued improvements to the program.
